The Demon Fruit Fly War

This post is about that little annoying fly that the good people from the south, battle continuously, and who knows maybe the north too by now.  They seem to be everywhere these days.  They are a flying invasion of our homes.  They are disgusting. They can get into anything.
I had battled with them, tried every idea someone else has put out there, from pouring stuff in the drains to all kinds of mixtures.  Nothing helped.  Next to the blood sucking mosquito, they are the little devils from hell.  They live to reproduce and torture us in our homes.
I was at my wits end until one of my friends from Louisiana told me about this product she had purchased from Amazon. It's called Terro Fruit Fly Trap.  This product last for 90 days and it will be the best 90 days of your life.  I kid you not. Its packaging is not unattractive and they work. Here is the direct link to the "Good Riddance of the F Flies".  Click this link:  https://amzn.to/3m2VTXX.
I'm happy to help anyone else to have a piece of mind in their home.  Let us all declare war on these little demon bugs, and while we are at it do not forget that Diatomaceous Earth put out around the home can also combat flees, ticks, ants, snakes, rodents, and other insects. Here is the product I use for around my house and immediate yard, this one is not food grade:  https://amzn.to/3ZoY2e4.  If you use it around anything that may eat it, such as chickens then by all means use the food grade DE, short for Diatomaceous Earth.  Here is the link I use for Food Grade: https://amzn.to/3TSBuS3.   It has many uses and is an excellent wormer for your chickens.
I hope that this little information helps someone.  Have a wonderful day until we meet again.  Thank you for your support and I am always up for your comments or questions.

Murder Point or Is it Myrtle?

Last Friday, March 3, 2023, this dabbler took a little road trip in search of a boat to the area of Grand Bay, Alabama.  This little gem was a Stauter Wooden Boat.  This particular boat was built in 1987.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Stauter built boat. I will be posting later about the restoration of this "diamond in the rough" in another post.  But a Stauter boat is a great little baby to have on the water.  Lawrence Stauter started his business in 1946, and built these boats at his boatyard on the Causeway in Mobile, Al. I could go on for miles about facts on Stauter boats but there is a wonderful article that covers the man behind the boat on this website: stauterbuiltboats.com.  I encourage you to read the article.  It is so interesting.

The picture at the top of the page is the boat. I know right now you are shaking your head and saying, "what a piece of junk," but I assure you that I have seen worse.  It truly is a diamond waiting to be polished.  The mystery that I want to solve is who originally owned this boat, because it is a special made Stauter.  Different than the patterns of most.  There has to be a story and as a dabbler in all, I have to find the answers.

Back to the journey to find this boat.  Grand Bay, Alabama, that is where we were headed.  Have not been there in a few years, so the trip should not be dull.  Always something new to see along the way.  With the little trailer behind the vehicle, we were beginning our journey. This trip also entailed putting new lights on that trailer, my youngest daughter uses the trailer a lot.
Anyway, it was close to lunch, and it was decided on the way to stop at a hole in the wall, those had the best food around most of the time.       As we passed restaurant after restaurant that I use to stop and eat at, they were either not opened yet or closed for good.  I was beginning to wonder if we would end up at a fast-food chain. I hate fast food.  We had a good deal of time before we were to meet the gentleman that owned the boat, so we decided to drive on into Grand Bay, Alabama, surely, they had somewhere to eat, that had seafood.  Low and behold, we passed a little restaurant that's name said it all, Southern Shells.

Let me tell you, this place was the best.  I had a shrimp po'boy on the best flavored bun with homemade sauce.  The shrimp were piling up and they were fresh off the boat.  The only recommendation I would make is for them to add tea too their menu (It's the South).  So, if you ever happen to drive thru Grand Bay, Alabama, stop at the Southern Shells and tell them the Southern Dabbler told you about this place.  They even have fresh seafood to pack and go. How convenient is that.  The owner of this fine establishment is Mr. Phillip Dixon, per our waitress.  Kudos to you Mr. Dixon.

It's still not time to meet the gentleman, so we head to the city of Bayou La Batre, Alabama.  Thought about getting some seafood right off of the shrimp boats.  Needless to say, we missed the boat and decided to go back by Southern Shells in Grand Bay and have their fine establishment pack us some shrimp for the return trip.

As we are about to turn on to the main road, I see this sign that says, Murder Point Oysters.  My first thoughts were, why would you want to name it that? Are they going to feed us oysters that will, well take care of matters.  LOL!  I had to find out the "why!"  Google to the rescue.  In fact, Murder Point is a place that use to be Myrtle Point, that is until 1929, When two men got into an argument over an oyster lease and one of them stabbed the other. Hence, the name Murder Point instead of Myrtle Point.  I did not know this and found it all interesting.  That is why road trips lead to fact trips.
Now before I end, here is a few facts.  Murder Point is the largest oyster farm in Alabama.  Others in the state are Point au Pins and of course, the one on my beloved Fort Morgan, Navy Cove Oysters.
I have eaten my fair share of Navy Cove Oysters, but the next time I'm in a place to eat oysters, I will see if Murder Point Oysters are available.  It's amazing at how a story will transform how you think about a place.

On an end note, to our journey, I am a proud owner of a Stauter Boat.  I did get the shrimp from Southern Shells, and I did make it home with that oversized boat strapped to the little trailer.  It is now covered in a brand new "Blue" tarp until the restoration begins. Last thing, the driver did not kill me for saying slow down a vast number of times for these pictures.

Tip: When I get to the epoxy stage of the boat, and I am telling this now because I have had people already ask this question, I use MAS Epoxy on almost all my art and restoration projects.  Here is the link: amzn.to/3KYo9o2.  I have tried them all and this one is the all-around best.  As far as the boats, I use a marine epoxy and here is the link to it: https://amzn.to/3qPLelZ
